Why We Are Here
“Why are we here?” That’s a question we all have. We all hope that our lives are not random and pointless. We want there to be a reason for our existence – a purpose – and we long to discover it. This search for meaning is just as important for churches as it is for individuals. The first line of Rick Warren’s deeply impactful book, The Purpose Driven Life, sums up the principal behind our church’s answer to that question, “Why are we here?” Warren writes: “It’s not about you.”
As our church has searched for our purpose for being here, we have increasingly heard God say, “It’s not about you. It’s about Me, and it’s about My love for this world I created, and My desire to see life return to be the joy-filled, meaningful experience I made it to be; and it’s about Me sending My Son into the World to do what needed to be done to turn things in the right direction again for people and this planet; and it’s about my calling you together in this church to follow my Son into the world, and into this city in particular – to work for the welfare that comes to people and their communities when they trust me and follow me.”
So that’s our answer to the question, “Why Are We Here?” We are Here because God has sent us here – to this city – to be used by Him to work for the great good God longs to do and bring in this place.
There is another question besides, “Why Are We Here?” that’s a compelling part of our church’s story: “Why Are We Still Here?” Our answer to that question is simply this: “We are still here because we are doing what we are here for!”
Meet our Pastor
Rev. Michael Stanton finds himself most complete when in community: with Christ; with Holly Stanton, his wife of 26 years; with their 4 children (Breanna, Rebecca, Mia, and Elijah); with his Sisters and Brothers in Christ; and with the members of the neighborhoods within which he lives and works.
The Stantons moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 2003 where Michael attended Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He graduated from PTS in 2006 with a Master of Divinity degree. In 2017 Michael was the recipient of the Seminary’s Distinguished Alumni award.
Equipped by his studies and supported by a handful of local churches, Rev. Stanton founded Open Hand Ministries, Inc. OHM is a thriving, Christ centered non-profit organization geared toward the promotion of racial justice in the inner-city Pittsburgh communities of Garfield and East Liberty. He served as OHM’s Executive Director for over 13 years before stepping aside to allow the growing organization reach its full potential.
His work with OHM resulted in 16 low -income/minority families becoming first time home-owners in redeveloping sections of East Liberty and Garfield neighborhoods – resulting in a 4 million dollar increase in asset value and a 2.5 million dollar increase in net worth for marginalized members of these 2 inner-city neighborhoods.
Michael looks forward to becoming a part of the McKeesport PC family and, together, serving the McKeesport neighborhood in God-honoring and transformative ways.
Worship with Us
We are here because God has sent us here – to McKeesport – to be used by Him to work for the great good God longs to do and bring in this place. Come and see what we’re all about.
